The IMPERATIVES:
WORK ETHIC,
RELATIONSHIPS,
LISTEN,
PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE,
TIME MGT / GOALS,
FOLLOW-UP.
In the sales business since 1976, I've won some, lost some, worked with amazing people both good and bad. Had accounts worth $0 and in an industry where a million dollar territory is considered very good, had accounts worth $5 million and a territory double that. Have managed a multi-branch corporation and helped provide guidance so that business grew in a very mature industry. I want to share my thoughts and yours about selling so that perhaps more of us will succeed on a more frequent basis. We need to "listen for a living" and "sell well or not at all!" SELL FROM THE TOP DOWN; We sales professionals need to sell as high up the ladder as possible. These selling IMPERATIVES will be posted on a regular basis hopefully we will all get involved in discussing them and their merits.
Planning to work and working the plan.I see it all too often, idle time , unproductive office time.By the sheer nature of the position comes great responsibility, fortitude and trust.Often the salesman become "order takers". A true salesman "sells"! They demonstrate these skills, High work ethic,research,follow-up and have the abilty of satisfying both internal and external customers. I believe this is an imperative as well.
